Each month we will highlight a few of the faith-based Houston nonprofits who are serving our community. Learn more here about the recent activities of CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, Generation One, SEARCH Homeless Services, and the St. John Paul II Foundation. If you feel called to assist them, please visit their websites below.
CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare
At CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, we exist to address healthcare and social service needs by providing funding and organizational support for seven remarkable programs in the Houston-Galveston area. Our programs reach out and attend to all faiths, ages and cultures. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, so does our service. CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic and CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic remain open and provide healthcare to those who find themselves in continued or newly-growing financial hardships. Staff from both CHRISTUS School Clinics and CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinics are temporarily offering additional support to both clinic staffs. While daily activity looks different at CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread, our homeless resource center in Galveston, CHRISTUS staff and volunteers have remained steadfast by providing two to-go meals a day, porta potties and hand-washing stations, and other essentials to the Galveston homeless population.
Located in Cuney Homes, Generation One remains a beacon of hope in the Third Ward. During this time, we are in touch with all our families, and we have identified ways to best meet their needs. Our Family Therapist is reaching out to students and families with video calls to assess needs and to counsel on stress management. Our creative and committed teachers are using YouTube videos, FaceTime calls, and other online learning resources to stay connected to the children. Our summer program is active with smaller groups participating on alternate days and with all COVID protocol in place. Staff are readying campus for Fall with utmost priority on health and safety. Generous donors have provided 100 laptops and tablets for students, and grocery gift cards for all our families. We appreciate your support.
SEARCH Homeless Services
While the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our work and on our homeless neighbors are far-reaching, SEARCH Homeless Services remains committed to serving our clients at this challenging, uncertain time. Whether working with clients who are still living on the streets or who are now living in one of SEARCH’s housing programs, our work with our clients today is focused on ensuring that they are well-informed on the virus and well-equipped to protect themselves, as well as helping them manage through the myriad challenges presented by the pandemic. SEARCH’s focus is also on continuing to move people from the streets into the safety of a home of their own. Unfortunately, with the severe economic downturn and mass loss of employment caused by the pandemic, we expect the number of homeless individuals and families will increase.
St. John Paul II Foundation
Our faith communities have been hit exceptionally hard and both staff and initiatives for families, clergy, and respect for human life are being dropped across the nation. So we launched the Share the Mission Fund that is being used exclusively to support marriage enrichment, clergy formation, and medical ethics education in the poorest and hardest hit dioceses. These trying times have proven the importance of medical professionals, and we have seamlessly moved our medical ethics conferences online and shifted topics to address medical and ethical concerns related to pandemics. We are excited to move forward with plans for our annual marriage conference, Together in Holiness, in Houston with a few important modifications – our team is carefully monitoring local health and safety recommendations, offering an at-home option in addition to the in-person event, and promoting the availability of full and partial scholarships more widely. We are committed to continuing to serve families in the greater Houston area, across the state, and the nation, especially during these unusual circumstances.
