Nonprofit Spotlight: August 2020

As a school exclusively serving students from low-income families, Covid-19 has had a severe impact on the Cristo Rey Jesuit community. The pandemic has presented our students and their families with illness, death, unemployment, food scarcity, and a lack of access to basic resources including technology. Still, we completed last school year with a 97% student engagement rate though the pandemic shut down in the Spring, and 100% of the Class of 2020 was accepted to college.
Cristo Rey Jesuit opened in 2008 amidst a national recession and persevered. With your help, we will once again be resilient to this crisis and will continue to work to narrow the poverty-wealth divide that has only widened as a result of this pandemic. Our Corporate Work-Study Program has taken a critical hit due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the oil price collapse on corporate budgets, resulting in a $2M shortfall in our traditional revenue. Everyone of our 500+ students attending Cristo Rey Jesuit is on scholarship. Support from members of the Houston Philanthropy Circle is a wise investment in Houston’s future.
