Each month we will highlight a few of the faith-based Houston nonprofits who are serving our community. Learn more here about the recent activities of Angela House, The Brookwood Community, and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. If you feel called to assist them, please visit their websites below.
Reentry, recovery, and redemption do not stop even for a global pandemic. Our services are needed now more than ever as women in Texas continue to be released from incarceration with limited resources for housing. Angela House maintains a deep commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of the women we serve. Our incredible staff and dedicated community partners have worked to create a holistic online learning curriculum and made adjustments to ensure our residents remain committed to recovery.
Our residents remain healthy and have made the best of the weeks of sheltering in place. They have forged a very strong sisterhood and developed a weekly gratitude meeting. Our community partners have outdone themselves offering Zoom classes in personal finance, family dynamics, fitness, Bible study, and 12-step group and sponsor meetings. We are in the process of updating our technological equipment to allow for more virtual meetings. We are deeply grateful for the continued support of our local philanthropic community that has answered the call in this time of need. Now, more than ever, the residents and graduates of Angela House need access to safe, affordable housing and stable employment opportunities.

The Brookwood Community
To say this is a unique and challenging time is an understatement for the Brookwood Community and so many nonprofits. In compliance with state and local guidelines, Brookwood’s on-site work programs for hundreds of adults with disabilities remain closed; events and tours have been canceled; and our café and retail stores are open, but with reduced capacity and decreased sales. We anticipate we may lose 50% of annual enterprise revenue from our Café and Retail sales this fiscal year, and the impact will be more dramatic if the pandemic lingers on. All of these abrupt changes forced us to think outside the box and create new methods to serve our community. Our Medical Team has adapted procedures to comply with the ever-changing mandates regarding assisted living facilities for the care and safety of our Residential Citizens. The Citizen Life Team has created virtual learning activities, take-home work boxes and on-line resources to support Brookwood Citizens and their families in mind, body, and spirit whether they were at home or on campus. Our staff continue to resourcefully navigate these unprecedented circumstances in order to keep the Brookwood spirit thriving, while ensuring that our Citizens are safe and healthy. We appreciate your prayers and support!
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
As a school exclusively serving students from low-income families, Covid-19 has had a severe impact on the Cristo Rey Jesuit community. The pandemic has presented our students and their families with illness, death, unemployment, food scarcity, and a lack of access to basic resources including technology. Still, we completed last school year with a 97% student engagement rate though the pandemic shut down in the Spring, and 100% of the Class of 2020 was accepted to college.
Cristo Rey Jesuit opened in 2008 amidst a national recession and persevered. With your help, we will once again be resilient to this crisis and will continue to work to narrow the poverty-wealth divide that has only widened as a result of this pandemic. Our Corporate Work-Study Program has taken a critical hit due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the oil price collapse on corporate budgets, resulting in a $2M shortfall in our traditional revenue. Everyone of our 500+ students attending Cristo Rey Jesuit is on scholarship. Support from members of the Houston Philanthropy Circle is a wise investment in Houston’s future.
